Agate Slice Candle Holder - History

Agate borrows its name from the Achates river in Sicily where it was discovered to be in abundance around 300 BC. As a result, it was often used by the Greeks to adorn jewelry and as seals for warriors. Romans themselves found large deposits along the Nahe river and set up several gem cutting facilities on the banks to fashion this gem. The Byzantines as well used Agate to make bowls and utensils. Agate probably reached its peak in the middle-ages in Europe where jewelry made from it was highly prized especially in the court of Queen Victoria.

The first people to use it, however, were from the Indus Valley Civilization back in the 3rd millennium BC, who fashioned it into beads for necklaces. Certain historians believe the gem could have even been used much earlier, as far back as 20000 BC as a form of protection.

The gem was believed to have medicinal properties throughout most of Europe and Asia. The Romans used the gem to grind ingredients for ointments and poultices. The Egyptians wore agate necklaces to protect from headaches and stiff necks. The Persians used to keep Agate crystals in the mouth to alleviate fevers.

The agate crystal itself comes in many types – Blue Lace Agate from Africa, Moss Agate from Australia and Fire Agate from North America to name a few.

Properties

Agate as a gem has transformative properties, capable of turning negative energy into positive. It is a calming stone that helps clear the mind of anxiety and fear. It helps improve concentration and, as it is associated with the third eye, helps with intuition and perception.

In terms of physical healing, the gem is beneficial for the eyes, stomach, uterus and lymphatic system. Depending on the type and color, the agate crystal crystal also aids in different things – Blue Lace for calming, Moss for success and prosperity as examples. A truly versatile stone.
